Park at the Pennings Nature Reserve. Walk back to the road and turn right, SE, along Ludgate Causeway.
Ignore the footpath, left. After number 3, turn right, SW, and cross the stile.
Head SW to the carved tree stump. The River Dove is to the right in the valley.
Cross the B1077 and continue south, soon bending SW.
Turn right through a kissing gate and head NW across the Dove valley and river, tree clump left.
1) Gate, bridge, gate, NW. 2) Gate, bridge, gate, NW. 3) Gate, bridge, gate, NW.
At the hedge and finger post, turn left, SW, hedge right.
Gate, crossing track, gate, continue SW, hedge right.
Kink right and left through a kissing gate and head roughly south, open field.
Bridge, gate, continue south, hedge right. Gate, south, hedge right. Right, west, gate.
Left, SW, diagonally across the small field.
Go through the kissing gate and turn left, SE and soon south. Bear right, SW.
Before farm buildings. turn right, west, up the bank to the non-obvious waymark on a tree trunk.
At the orchard, cross the stile and turn right, north, orchard left.
At the reservoir, turn left, west, on a wide track between orchards.
Pole-top transformer, continue west under power lines.
Stile, gate, turn right onto tarmac, NE. Turn first left, NW, soon west on tarmac.
At the T junction, continue west towards Thornham on tarmac.
A few paces later, kink right then left into the field and head west, hedge left.
The path kinks right and left, trees left.
At the pole-top transformer, bear right, north, across the open field. Continue north, woodland left.
Cross the footbridge and head north into the woodland.
Turn right, east, on a wide track which soon reverts to a woodland path.
Cross a gap and continue east into more woodland. Continue east, hedge right.
Continue east, ditch left.
At a finger post and pond, turn left, north, ditch and Les Cotton posts, left.
At the end of the field, turn right, east, ditch left. After a few paces, turn left, north and cross the ditch.
A few paces later, turn right into the woodland and head east.
This is a little-used path and the field perimeter might be better at certain times of year.
Turn right, south, and cross a footbridge. Head south, woodland left.
Turn left, east, woodland left. Kink right and left to avoid entering farm buildings.
Continue east, hedge left. Kink right and left and continue NE, hedge left.
Go through the hedge gap and continue NE. Turn left, north onto tarmac.
At telegraph pole number one, turn right, cross the stile and head east, hedge left.
Cross the open field heading a little north of east. Aim for the big house on the distant hill top.
Continue across the field now aiming to the right of two barn roofs.
Near the barns, turn left, north on a wide track.
The track bends right NE. Ignore a footpath left. Continue NE to the B1077.
Turn right, SE, along the B1077, then first left, north along The Rookery.
At the B1117, turn right, east, or divert via the castle, ahead, north, up Castle Hill.
Continue east along the B1117.
Optionally divert left to visit the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, leaving via the east gate.
Cross the river Dove. Turn right, south, into Ludgate Causeway.
At the WW2 gun emplacement, turn right into the Pennings Nature reserve car park.
