4.5 miles or 6.6 via Manningtree railway station.
Start from the picnic site at Cattawade.
Head north, then east out of the car park and cross the A137.
Head past the Fontana and then the Crown.
Opposite the Crown car park, turn right, SW, and cross the old bridge.
Merge with the A137 and head SW towards Manningtree.
Cross the White Bridge over the river Stour into Essex.
Soon after the bridge, turn right, west, along the flood defence bank, river right.
VIA MANNINGTREE STATION:
1.5 miles or 30 minutes from Cattawade, turn left, SE, away from the river.
This path is signposted. Head south, east and south and cross under the railway.
Turn left, east, and walk to the station where there is a large pay car park.
FROM MANNINGTREE STATION:
Head roughly SW from the station entrance to the pedestrian car park exit.
Turn right, west, parallel with the railway.
Turn right, north, under the railway.
Head north, west, north and finally NW up to the flood bank path.
Turn left, SW, towards Flatford.
The path meanders mainly west.
Turn right, north, towards Flatford, concrete flood wall right.
At Flatford, there are nice views over the mill pond and the lock.
Head right, north across the Stour into Suffolk.
There is a large National Trust car park north of the river crossing.
From the bridge, the Stour Valley path goes right, east, and later SE on a tarmac lane.
At a sign board, turn left, NW, on a gravel track, fence right.
Before a gate, turn right, SE, and later east.
Kink left and right, through a gate and continue east, fence right.
The field perimeter path bends right, south.
Go through another gate and bear left, NE, fence left.
Follow this path roughly east all the way to the B1070.
Turn right, SE, along the B1070 for the last half mile.
Turn right into the picnic site.
